Pets attack alongside their owners using standard attacks that can also be boosted using Pet Attack skills. There is a pet interface screen which allows the player to control the movements of the GW pets, unlike minions, and tell them to heel, attack, etc.

Guild Wars pets have names that can be changed using the /petname <name> command. The names of hero pets cannot be changed, however. The basic commands of GW pets are attack mode, guard mode, heel mode and pet name. Guild Wars pets or animal companions are considered allies and not party members. They will not take up a space in your party and you can still have the typical number of party members in your group.

Guild Wars pets earn experience from battles, even if they are dead or far from the party during combat. If you want to level your pet up, it’s a good idea to always have it out and ready when you are questing or fighting mobs. GW pets have their level capped at 20, like players. The experience bonus for completing missions and quests, and any effect from experience scrolls, do not apply to GW pets.

Guild Wars pets can be a fun addition to the game and to your groups. Some players even enjoy collecting them and getting more collectible pets.
